The public broadcaster makes an essential contribution to the Canadian broadcasting system. By investing more in Canadian programming than all other conventional broadcasters combined, CBC/Radio-Canada provides critical support for Canadian content and the independent production sector that creates it, contributes to a diversity of voices in the media landscape, and provides distinctive programming available nowhere else and which Canadians are tuning into in record numbers.
Through our new strategic plan and through our application, we've committed to improving the service we offer Canadians over the next five years. We've promised to provide even more Canadian content than we do today, to improve and expand our local television and radio services, and to double the investment we make in digital platforms.
To deliver on our promise, we need a regulatory framework that will enable our progress.
We're seeking a flexible framework that will allow us to operate efficiently and effectively in an ever-evolving multiplatform environment.
Given the recent vertical integration of our industry, we're asking the CRTC to require that our services have mandatory access to distribution platforms, on a reasonable basis.
The Local Programming Improvement Fund (LPIF) is critical to our ability to continue to enhance the local services we've promised under our strategic plan.
